<p>The Working Group produced OWL 2, a W3C Recommendation that refines and extends OWL, the Web Ontology Language
</p>

<p>The OWL Web Ontology Language is designed for use by applications that need to process the content of information instead of just presenting information to humans. OWL facilitates greater machine interpretability of Web content than that supported by XML, RDF, and RDF Schema (RDF-S) by providing additional expressive power along with a formal semantics.

<p>The Working group will remain dormant (i.e.,  inactive but not closed) pending <a href="http://www.w3.org/TR/xmlschema11-2/" class="external text" title="http://www.w3.org/TR/xmlschema11-2/" rel="nofollow">XML Schema Definition Language (XSD) 1.1 Part 2: Datatypes</a> becoming a W3C Recommendation. The Working Group will then update those deliverables that depend on the XSD specification (<a href="http://www.w3.org/TR/2009/REC-owl2-syntax-20091027/" class="external text" title="http://www.w3.org/TR/2009/REC-owl2-syntax-20091027/" rel="nofollow">Structural Specification and Functional-Style Syntax</a>, <a href="http://www.w3.org/TR/2009/REC-owl2-conformance-20091027/" class="external text" title="http://www.w3.org/TR/2009/REC-owl2-conformance-20091027/" rel="nofollow">Conformance</a> and <a href="http://www.w3.org/TR/2009/REC-rdf-plain-literal-20091027/" class="external text" title="http://www.w3.org/TR/2009/REC-rdf-plain-literal-20091027/" rel="nofollow">rdf:PlainLiteral</a>), at which point it will finally be closed.
