Abstract

This specification defines the XML Pointer Language (XPointer), the language
to be used as the basis for a fragment identifier for any URI reference that
locates a resource whose Internet media type is one of
text/xml
,
application/xml
,
text/xml-external-parsed-entity
, or
application/xml-external-parsed-entity
.

Status of this Document

This document has been superceded.

The design described in previous versions of this document has been
factored into a basic framework (http://www.w3.org/TR/xptr-framework/) which defines XPointer schemes and simple "barename" fragment identifiers, and three additional schemes: http://www.w3.org/TR/xptr-element/, for addressing elements by their position in the document tree,
http://www.w3.org/TR/xptr-xmlns/, for binding namespace
prefixes to namespace name and
http://www.w3.org/TR/xptr-xpointer/, for full
XPath-based addressing.

For information about the requirements that informed development of
this specification,
see http://www.w3.org/TR/NOTE-xptr-req.

A list of current W3C Recommendations and other technical documents can be
found at http://www.w3.org/TR/.
